A Day @ Phipps with the Family

The title is literal. This one started as a day trip to Phipps Conservatory — Schmiedlin with his wife, his daughter and her grandmother, three generations of one family taking in the garden together. What came home was this: the giant lily pads with their turned-up rims stacked up the board like stepping stones, an orange fish slipping between them, and the garden crowding in from every edge.

Then there's the frog. Cut as its own piece and mounted on top, it sits proud of the surface under the resin — the one creature in the pond that actually rises out of the water. Schmiedlin lays the color down translucent so the birch grain moves underneath it like light through water, then seals everything under a glass-clear pour.

The panel itself is die-cut rather than rectangular, so the piece hangs as an object on the wall, not a picture in a frame. At over four feet tall, it holds a wall on its own.
